Art and Design

At Acre Hall we value Art and Design as an important part of our children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. To make progress in art and design, we ensure our pupils learn the following essential skills and processes: exploring and creating – which enable pupils to develop and express ideas using a range of processes in purposeful ways, taking account of perception, invention, communication and pleasure, and understanding and evaluating − which allow pupils to reflect on their own and others’ work and make reasoned choices when developing personal outcomes. The range of content is identified in broad terms, which allows teachers to: be flexible when selecting and delivering projects, plan inclusive lessons, taking into account pupils’ needs and celebrating individual expression, and address issues of difference, challenge, stereotypes and promote positive attitudes.

Pupils will develop practical knowledge of how to create art, craft and design, for example by learning the methods and techniques that artists, craft-makers and designers use. They will build theoretical knowledge of the tools, materials and history of art, craft and design.

Pupils will acquire disciplinary knowledge of the concept of art itself, such as the ways it is judged, valued and evaluated. We know that pupils make progress in the art curriculum when they build practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge and learn the connections between them. Therefore we provide a high-quality art and design curriculum that sequences the knowledge that pupils learn. This helps pupils to improve practice as they move through early years, key stage one and key stage two.
